Child's Bedroom: "You are My Sunshine"
/Child’s Bedroom, Bath, and Dressing Closet - “You are My Sunshine”
The inspiration for this child’s bedroom design sprung from the pages of classic children’s literature. I wanted to capture the enchanting images of classics such as The Wind in the Willows, Charlotte’s Web, and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and express the images from those pages though color, texture, space, and design.
I used a happy palette of marigold, persimmon, subtle fuchsia, robin’s egg blue, and willow to express warmth and coziness. The walls, painted in Benjamin Moore’s Golden Straw 2152-50, created a cheerful backdrop for the whimsical fabrics of stripes, zigzags, flamestitch, flowers and birds. The room was transformed into a children’s retreat with dolls, a tea set, miniature chairs, books, and other trimmings, yet it was sophisticated enough to evolve into a teenage refuge with a simple change of accessories. The garden watercolor artwork by painter Marcia Mitchell invokes images of Mr. McGregor’s garden on a spring day.
An 8’ x 11’ sun-inspired area rug was used to carry color through the room. The vibrant Yves Delorme bedding ensemble of Kacho-Ga sheets and pillow shams in coral were paired with a subtle ecru quilted bedspread and a simple gathered bed skirt. The coral throw added a splash of color.
A round tufted ottoman in vibrant tangelo velvet makes for a great place to perch or hold a tea party. The floral motif lamp in the hues of the room rests atop a French gray end table. The tightback chair has a contemporary flamestitch in a multihued fabric adding a touch of plum and fuchsia to the room scheme.
The pale oyster finish of the chest softens the mocha finish on the sleighbed that was slipped under an eave by the window. The seven drawer hand-decorated tall chest allows maximum clothing storage.
The draped floral swag window treatment, in a sweet embroidered fabric, accents the Palladium window, while still allowing the light and view to filter through. The curtain rod with dainty cloverleaf finials, in addition to the holdbacks, are all hand painted in a gold finish.
A mini vanity table, along with a cute bench with a skirted slipcover, is tucked into one eave. Another eave has a petite bookcase fitted into the corner.
In the bath, a long white bench was added to use as a resting spot while putting on shoes or clothes and to hold extra towels. A slipcovered skirt added a dash of color and fun. The Yves Delorme Kacho-GA bath towels pickuped on the bird motif in the fabric of the shower curtains and pullbacks.
The graceful six light wrought iron and crystal chandelier in gold finish is by Curry & Company. The spacious walk-in closet is used as a closet and dressing area. The oyster Chest provides additional storage as well as a place to display jewelry, perfumes, and personal mementos.
